The Mont Blanc Carbon is a step into the world of super shoes by Altra and I think their first attempt is a good one. The fit is pretty typical for Altra with a medium volume midfoot and generously sized toe box. One thing that was a little strange feeling at first was the relatively small heel cup compared to just about any other running shoe I've worn. At first, it felt like my heel would come out of the shoe on climbs but it has proven to hold just like you would hope.
With what I would call mid-sized lugs it performs great on groomer trails and just as well on the semi-technical stuff too as the carbon plate provides ample protection. Having just recently completed a 50k race in this shoe I can also say that the cushion is adequate for ultras.
If you are an enjoyer of the Altra fit, zero drop, and are looking for a fast shoe, this is a great option to scratch that speedy itch.
Altra Mont Blanc Carbon Shoe
Since the release of the Mont Blanc and then the Mont Blanc BOA, one would be hard-pressed not to see either of these elegant beauties toeing the line at any ultra-running event. It was only natural that the engineers built on that reputation with the Altra Mont Blanc Carbon. The Carbon uses Altra's Standard FootShape™, which accommodates a wide range of feet. The Vibram® Megagrip outsole is magically mixed with Litebase technology, providing this mountain racer's base. This durable, long-lasting rubber compound grips virtually any surface and cuts precious grams from the shoe's overall weight. In cars, tires might be essential, but it's usually the suspension that counts. Analogies aside, Altra has combined their EGO-PRO and EGO-Max foams to create a midsole that excels on uneven and undulating terrain while also providing high responsiveness. A full-length carbon fiber plate adds significant underfoot protection and propulsion to your stride. Combine in a bowl, stir, and bake, and you undoubtedly have a race-ready, energy-efficient, ultra-slaying machine in the Mont Blanc Carbon.
