The movie "Shrek" premiered in 2001 as a fun satire littered with pop culture references, filtered through the lens of a standoffish ogre. "Shrek II" retained the same core cast while improving the animation and plot sophistication on the way to becoming the highest-grossing animated film of the 2000s. Similarly, the second-generation Ultra 100 is still a shoe for the cushion-conscious distance runner, but some key features make it even more appealing to a wider audience. Right away, discerning runners will notice an expanded toe box, which has gone from "Euro" wide to a more generous width. The Vibram Traction Lugs feature itty bitty nubbins on the sidewall of the lugs for amazing grip in all directions. These Vibram soles seem to strike the perfect balance of traction and efficiency to give you grip when you need it and a smooth ride when the trail chills out. The rockered sole encourages an efficient gate and provides a healthy dose of energy return. Unlike many other high-cushion shoes that can make you feel disconnected from the trail, the Ultra 100 gives plenty of feedback. If you do find yourself in an enchanted forest, there is a toe bumper in place to protect you from ground gremlins who are waiting to tear your shoes apart. Just like Shrek, these shoes are another loveable character, brought to you by the Dynafit family of footwear.

SkyRun Fit Tip - We recommend sizing up one half to one whole US size for a proper fit.

  • Seamless tongue prevents instep discomfort.
  • Maximum cushion supports runners heading out for endurance days or toeing the line at their next ultra-marathon.
  • Vibram Traction Lugs are ready for a mix of different surface types.
  • Rockered sole and EVA foam midsole provide superb energy return.

Sonia G (downright abused product)

This shoe was so close to a perfect trail shoe for me, but could use an upgrade in durable materials and toebox shape. I typically wear size 8 in running shoes and went with an 8.5 to give a little more room for local trails with a lot of steeper descents. I think ultimately the size was right, but it is a little long and roomy in the toe box. The heel lock and midfoot design is fantastic for customizing to narrower feet! There is a very noticeable break-in that occurs at about 30 miles, where the heel shape sinks into the insole and drops your foot down into the shoe. At first I thought the shoe felt packed out and too roomy, the fit got nice and dialed in with thicker socks after about 60 miles. I still get a little lateral movement in the toe box that gives me wicked big toe callouses, but never have issues with heel slipping or lacing the midfoot down to a perfect cinch. I will note that the lace garage was nice at first, but got in the way of tightening where I needed, so I did cut it off and had no issues since. The rubber toe bumper is a champ at protecting from rocks, although I did catch my toes a few times before getting used to the longer shape. The tread and grip is great on steeper inclines and loose technical downhill.
Where I longed for improvements was the overal durability of the shoe. I took my pair on one off-trail peak climb and abraided the foam around the edges of the shoe significantly just navigating a few miles of scrambling and a rocky mining road. The beveled foam around the heel catches on rocks in alpine terrain, and can collapse at the edges where the foam has a lip. The foam leaves a lot to be desired on overall comfort as well. The shoe is nimble and fun, but after about 7 miles of hardpack trail or demanding descents, you feel your body taking the impact instead of the foam. The tapered shape of the foam around the heel might be the cause of the rough ride and rapid deterioration. There was noticeable wear and tear throughout the shoe already at about 75 miles. I continue to use this as my go-to trail shoe, but the material at the top of the toe box is wearing a hole where the ball of my foot bends the shoe on pushoff. I would not recommend this shoe if you run a lot of road-to-trail transitions. These shoes shine on singletrack, but feel pretty lifeless on dirt roads and flatter runs. Looking forward to the release of version 3 to see if they updated the foam and adjusted the toe box. Overall a solid daily trainer for shorter distances on most trail terrain. Highly recommend for narrower feet!

Answer from Zak M

Hey Chrissie, assuming you went true to size for your Altra shoes, going 1/2 size up would be the way to go for the Ultra 100.
