Ultrarunners need a shoe that is committed to the long haul - ample cushion, durability, protection, and support - all without weighing you down. Thankfully, the Salomon S/Lab Ultra 3 V2 has got your back, err, feet. The trademark of any ultra shoe is lots of cushion but unfortunately, sometimes that means energy-sapping squish. Not here. EnergyCell+ is a durable high-rebound midsole compound that not only brings the cushion but is also designed to provide springy energy return. And since ultras often run the gamut (pun intended) of trail conditions, a diverse outsole like the Contagrip MA is ideal for tackling everything from wet and loose to dry and rocky. The new Matryx® mesh upper is breathable, yet abrasion-resistant while an integrated gaiter fends off trail debris from entering the shoe. For those long days on trail, the Salomon S/Lab Ultra 3 V2 is a fully-featured, lightweight shoe that won’t squander an ounce of your energy.

This shoe rocks and I'm glad I bought a pair. My use for this shoe is technical long runs, and they're working out perfectly. The standout feature of this shoe is the fit. The fit is unlike any other shoe I've put on - it's low volume, narrow, and feels like a sock. They work perfectly for my feet, although I do need to be careful not to over-tighten the laces, since the materials do not stretch at all. The lockdown is excellent with the Quicklace system.

The midsole is on the firmer/more responsive side, and the shoe rides relatively low, which works very well in technical terrain. It is a very nimble and quick-feeling shoe, and it's very stable. There is enough cushion for long days, and the rock protection is excellent. There is a short break-in period for the midsole.

Durability-wise, I think the upper and midsole will last a very long time. The only disclaimer I would put on this shoe is that the outsole is very race-oriented, so the lugs are small and spaced apart, and the rubber is fairly soft. If your foot strike tends to drag/wear the outsole in particular spots, I think this outsole will wear relatively quickly.

Question from Henriette L

Hi, there. I'm a fan of these shoes in their older version, but they have also kind of beaten up my feet on long distances (44km or more) and technical terrain. So I'm curious about whether this new version would be an improvement with a bit more cushioning. Also curious about the La Sportiva Levante or Prodigio, and how those would compare to the Salomons. Any advice? I know I'm looking for something nigh impossible: a trail shoe with the nimble close-to-the-ground feel of these Salomons but also with more cushioning!

Hi Henriette, Thanks for reaching out. The V2 version's upper was changed to improve durability, but there weren't changes to the lower. Many have made the move, with great success, from the Ultra 3 to the S/LAB Genesis. It has 5mm more cushion and is a pleasure to run long miles in. It also has a Matryx upper with an integrated gaiter, which were the upgrades to the V2. You should be able to make a lateral move in size from your Ultra 3 to the Genesis.
If you fill out our shoe fitter, we'd be happy to make size recommendations for those or other shoes.

One more thing: I have a pair of Thundercross that I like for their cushioning. A recent run on a very rocky, rooty trail revealed that there's a bit more squish and movement in the shoe than I'd like. So if we throw those into the comparison, and I'm looking for something with the cushion and comfort of the Thundercross but the technical ability of the old Ultras, what would you suggest? (Yes, I'm the princess-and-the-pea of running shoes!)

Answer from Jeremy L

I will still suggest the Genesis. It's pea-free and everything you are looking for in a shoe. It has ample cushion for the miles and excellent trail feel for the technical bits. Courtney Dauwalter ran three major 100-mile races in them in 2023, which helped place these on the map. This is a great shoe! We are expecting more to arrive in the next week.

Well, heck, if it's good enough for Courtney. . .
Thank you for the insight here. I'll be ordering a pair of the Genesis!
