Hoka didn't set out to reinvent the wheel entirely with the Mafate 5, but several thoughtful and quality improvements were made while the original theme remains. A warp-knit jacquard upper with anti-fray treatment and a stretchy Dynamic Vamp increases durability and all-day comfort. Newly added gaiter attachments are great insurance for long, debris-free runs because nobody wants to stop to rid themselves of that annoying pebble. The dual-density midsole has been flipped to improve the rebound and cushion, so long mileage days have never felt better. Vibram's Megagrip outsole remains, therefore, and so does increased traction in all conditions, such as muddy trails in New England or buffed trails in Colorado. The one shoe to rule them all may not exist, but Hoka's Mafate 5 is a contender.
