A for Awesome? A for Aardvark? A for Another paradigm-shifting shoe from norda that challenges our understanding of the limits of trail running shoes in terms of durability and performance? That's right, norda continues to raise the bar with the 001A shoe. In this case, the A is for Arnitel - the one-of-a-kind midsole material that elevated the 005 to its podium of high-performance. Arnitel is a TPEE polymer that, when used as a midsole, offers super-shoe propulsion and ultra-marathon cushion. The rest of the shoe will feel very familiar to those who know the Norda 001. The upper is made from a highly durable Dyneema weave engineered to promote breathability. Dyneema - a sailing fabric well known for its strength-to-weight ratio that exceeds steel - also graces the laces and memory foam insole, protecting all of the shoe's soft parts against wear. The full coverage Vibram Megagrip + Litebase outsole will keep you upright and confident with your footing. For a burly all-arounder shoe that delivers high-end, race shoe performance, the norda 001A has little competition.

SkyRun Fit Tip - We suggest sizing up 1/2 US size in the 001A for a proper fit.

  • norda Lock System lace gussets keep your foot anchored in place for a secure fit.
  • Vibram Megragrip + Litebase is the bees' knees when it comes to resilient and grippy.
  • Dyneema-based construction holds the shoe together for hundreds after hundreds of miles.
  • Arnitel midsole gives 005 performance to the robust 001.

I'm still getting used to this shoe, but have a lot of good things to say after about 50 miles in them. I was wary about the hefty price tag at first since I was not able to try them on locally. However, this shoe fits suprisingly well on my narrow feet. The overal shape of the shoe is a refreshing deviation from most trail shoes. There is ample toe box space to splay, and the shape stays rounded rather than pointing or squaring off at the toes. The rubber/gum outsole for the traction and protection all the way around the shoe is awesome for the dry rocky trails I'm usually on. Overall very lightweight, secure on the uphill, and fast on the downhill. The thin suede tongue sits very comfortably just below where my ankle flexes on the uphill. However, you have to play around with the lacing and make sure you don't crank them down too tight, or you might get some numbness on the top of the feet on long ascents. The heel wrap is made of the same leather and does lock me in while maintaining a lot of flex. At first this feels like your heel isn't locked, but after several runs, I never feel my heel sliding or lifting and the material just moves with you. If you wear socks that sit above the ankle you will avoid the dreaded heel rub break in period. I did get bold and wear no-show socks once, and rubbed a nice raw spt on both my heels. According to many reviews and Skyrun's shoe guys, the heel softens after about 50 miles and never rubs therafter. Since I do have a high arch, I find the insole it comes with a little lacking on arch support, so I swapped it for a Sidas trail insole with no impact to the fit. So far I have run only dirt roads and lightly technical trails. The dyneema upper is very durable, but very soft, so I do feel a little lateral instability and shifting in the shoe, since the material doesn't sit stiffly around the shoe. Continuing to break them in, and see them as a long term shoe in my rotation for most trails.

Question from Sonia G

Hi guys,

How would you describe the fit of this shoe? I am really interested in trying Norda, but have a high instep, high arches and narrow heels. Do they usually fit a standard/wider foot, or can they be adjusted quite a bit for midfoot and heel lock?

Hi Sonia,

I consider the Nordas to be rather wide, with a lacing/inner system that can be cinched down to accommodate a narrower foot. Folks who wear Altras or Speedgoats often like the feel of Nordas. However, if I were to fit you from scratch, I'd probably start with La Sportiva or Nnormal as I think their lines tend to trend toward a fitted midsole and secure heel.

Question from Holden

Hello! Are the women’s and men’s last different or is it just sizing? I was looking for the calcite colorway but looks like you guys only have it in the women’s. Thanks!

Answer from Will McD

Hi Holden,

The men's and women's 001A's are exactly the same shoe, the only "difference" is which size (men's or women's) is listed first on the tag and box. Keep in mind that the men's 001A uses men's sizing, so you'll want to subtract 1.5 from your US women's size to get the correct fit.
